Terry Borcheller Rolexing At Fontana
hot race
Terry Borcheller enjoyed a strong race weekend at California Speedway in
Fontana, Calif., with a Grand-Am Cup victory and a pole and podium finish in the
Rolex Sports Car Series. The success followed a Rolex Series win in
Birmingham, Ala., on May 18.
Borcheller, of Phoenix, won the pole position for the June 8 Rolex Series
race with a lap time of one minute 32.314 seconds on the 2.8-mile infield road
course. Despite early setup difficulties, he and Forest Barber of Fort Worth,
Tex., drove the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Doran JE4 to third in the Daytona
Prototype class. Borcheller also scored the fastest lap of the race (1:33.464).
"We missed on the car setup," Borcheller explained. "It had been overcast
most of the week and even when the sun was out it was not blazing hot. But by
race time on Sunday, it was hot and the track temperature was higher than it
had been all week. I ran two to three seconds slower in my first stint than I
had all week. For my final stint, we did several big changes and the car was
right back to where it had been in handling and lap times."
tough tires
Borcheller's final stint was a true test of the team's Goodyear tires.
Although the stint was longer than usual, the team did not change tires during the
last pit stop. "The tires were good for the extra distance," he noted. "They
were great from start to finish."
Cup win
Borcheller and Barber started the weekend with a last-to-first GSII victory
in the June 7 Grand-Am Cup race. Barber was hampered by an abbreviated
qualifying session and had to settle for 15th on the class starting grid, but he and
Borcheller made the most of an excellent car setup to charge to the front.
Borcheller also earned the fastest class lap.
"Qualifying was only 15 minutes," Borcheller explained. "Forest did a run
through the pits to try to get a better spot on track but he didn't get even one
clean lap, so we started last. But he did a phenomenal job in the race -
whenever he came into the pits, he was first.
"It was a flawless race and the crew did a great job with pit stops. We
completely changed the direction of the car setup and it was unbelievable. It was
the best it's ever been and we've been running this car for five years. Hats
off to [team owner] Jim Bell!"
commercial win
Borcheller enjoyed the commercial success of the weekend, as well, noting the
value of wins and poles for his sponsors K&N Performance Filters, Infinity2
Nutrition, Dark Dog, Alpinestars, Bell Helmets, Bob Bondurant School of High
Performance Driving, Gatorz Eyewear and Goodyear. The California run was
especially rewarding for K&N, based in nearby Riverside.
next
Borcheller returned to Phoenix for a few hours of sleep and was off again at
5 am, en route to France for the 24 Heures du Mans. He'll drive the No. 94
Risi Competizione Ferrari 360 Modena in the prestigious endurance classic on
June 14 and 15.
