Russ Scheffler Tops Hales'
LM Wally Jors Memorial
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., June 7--Russ Scheffler dominated the annual Wally Jors
Memorial UMP late model feature held Saturday on All-Glass Aquarium Scout Night
at the Hales Corners Speedway, and in doing so, joined his father as a
four-time winner of the event.
"Wally Jors was a great racer and for me and my dad to each have four
wins in this race is very special for our family," the happy winner said from
victory lane.
Russ started the big 50-lap main event from the pole and burst into the
early lead ahead of his father George, Jim Zdroik, defending track champ Bret
Sievert and Dan Sorce. After three laps, Sievert stormed into second by
passing both George Scheffler and Zdroik exiting turn two with an aggressive move.
Once in second, Sievert set sail for Scheffler and caught him, taking the
lead with a move to the inside up the backstretch on lap seven.
At this point it appeared Sievert might make a romp of it, as he has had
a habit of lately. Russ was having none of it, however. Scheffler moved to
the top and kept the heat on Sievert for the next three laps, moving back past
and into the lead using the outer lane up the backstretch at lap 11.
Scheffler began to lap the tailenders at lap 14 and opened up a large
lead, only to have it disappear with the event's first caution flag on lap 20
when Zdroik pounded the turn four wall after contact with another car amidst
slower traffic. Two wreckers removed Zdroik's battered mount and when the race
resumed, just four more circuits were completed before Bill Rezutek brought out
the second yellow with a solo spin in turn two on lap 24.
Scheffler continued to lead Sievert while the battle for third place
intensified between Sorce, Chris Carlson and Scott Specht. Carlson got past Sorce
for third by lap 30, with Rick Scheffler joining the fight and moving to
fourth by the event's third and final yellow on lap 38 when Turk Letizia's car
coasted to a stop at the pit entrance and had to be pushed away.
Over the final 12 laps Scheffler managed to keep Sievert at a safe
distance and picked up the big win. Sievert, meanwhile, had to weather an attack
from Carlson over the final laps. Carlson settled for third, with Rick
Scheffler fourth and Specht fifth.
The night's 20-lap sportsmen feature began with Mark Lewis getting the
early advantage over Pat Heaney, Brian Blake and Don Sorce Jr. Sorce Jr., the
defending track champ, made short work of Heaney and Blake and moved to second
by lap three. On lap four Sorce Jr. used the inside line up the backstretch
to power past Lewis and into the top spot.
Roger Lee and Dave Gorny moved to the second and third positions,
respectively, by the event's first caution flag on lap eight for a John Schultz III
spin in turn four. Gorny got around Lee before the event's second yellow on
lap 12 when Heaney looped his car in turn two.
Gorny challenged Sorce Jr. for the top spot on the restart but Sorce was
too quick and got away before being reeled back in by the event's third and
final yellow on lap 15 for a Joe Altenhofen spin in turn two.
When the race resumed, Sorce Jr. cruised serenely to the win while Lee
battled back past Gorny in the final five circuits to record a runner-up finish.
Gorny settled for third, with Bob Brent fourth and Terry Thomas fifth in a
good run.
Jim Zdroik followed up fast time with a feature win in the 20-lap
modified main event, ending his day on an up note after crashing in the night's UMP
late model feature. Jason Zdroik made it a Hurricane Racing one-two finish,
with Brian Crapser third, Scott Barnharst fourth and Mike Conn fifth.
After a series of good runs, Chris Hoedel finally made it to victory lane
in the night's 20-lap Hales Whales feature. Barry Cates trailed in second,
with J.J. Weickowski third, Jim Reinhardt fourth and David Paskiewicz fifth.
Eddie Lemay III won the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies show-closer.
On Saturday, June 14 the Hales Corners Speedway prestents a full program
of UMP late model, sportsmen, modified and Hales Whales racing, plus the
4-cylinder Mud Puppies. The night will be highlighted by a 30-lap UMP late model
