Twenty five seemed to be the magic number for #10 Valvoline Pontiac driver
Johnny Benson on Sunday in Pocono.
Benson's 25th-place finish on Sunday moved him to 25th in the 2003 Driver
Standings.
"We struggled today," said Benson after the race. "We didn't get a happy hour
on Saturday so we didn't get to run our brand new car. Now I wish we would have
had some time to work on it, but you know 25th isn't terrible. We worked hard
all day and moved up in the points. It could have been a lot worse."
Benson referred to three scary accidents by Ken Schrader, Dale Jarrett and Jeff
Green.
"I'm glad those guys are OK. Those wrecks looked pretty serious from what I
could see out on the race track. "
Schrader flipped and caught fire, Jarrett caught fire, and Green's car slammed
the inside wall with tremendous force. All three drivers were uninjured.
Benson's day was fortunately uneventful.
He started 24th and except for a brief appearance in 14th after some pit
strategy, Benson hung around the middle of the pack most of the race.
The high speeds at Pocono combined with the one groove turns made passing very
limited. Drivers took turns leading the race and were able to stretch the lead
because of the clean air.
Traffic seemed to slow everyone.
"We struggled getting off the corners all day," Benson said. "We have some work
to do but we know in what direction we need to head when we come back here in
July."
Benson said he plans to be higher than 25th when he returns to the Pennsylvania
track.
"We go to some places we like in the next few weeks," he said. "We can take
some positives out of this race and move on."
Tony Stewart won his first race of the year holding off a charging Mark Martin.
It appeared Martin would battle Stewart but Green's wreck in the closing laps
forced the race to end under caution.
Benson and his Valvoline teammates return to action Sunday at Michigan
International Speedway.
