EPA Administrator Whitman to Deliver Keynote Address at 14th Annual Energy Efficiency Forum

WASHINGTON, June 5 -- Outgoing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Todd Whitman will discuss energy and the environment in the keynote address at the 14th annual Energy Efficiency Forum June 11 at the National Press Club.

This year's forum, "The Path to Economic and National Security," is co-sponsored by the United States Energy Association (USEA) and Johnson Controls, Inc.

Since she was named EPA administrator in January 2001, Whitman has supported several public-private partnerships aimed at simultaneously delivering economic success and environmental progress. Programs such as Climate Leaders, ENERGY STAR, SmartWay Transport and the Water Quality Trading Policy encourage voluntary action from government, business and nonprofit groups to achieve positive environmental goals, including energy efficiency.

This will be one of the last public appearances by Whitman, who is leaving office at the end of June.

Whitman is a past winner of the Governor's Energy Leadership Award from the Energy Efficiency Forum. She was cited for her advocacy of energy efficiency while governor of New Jersey from 1994 to 2001. Among the most far-reaching measurements enacted by Whitman in New Jersey was a $358 million spending program that included financial incentives for energy efficient building designs and the development of renewable energy projects.

In addition to Whitman, this year's Energy Efficiency Forum will feature speakers offering a variety of perspectives on energy issues include Deputy Energy Secretary Kyle McSlarrow; Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee; Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., Republican co-chair of the House Caucus on Renewable Energy; and Colorado Gov. Bill Owens.

The Energy Efficiency Forum is an annual nonpartisan event designed to raise awareness of energy efficiency issues. For more information on this year's forum, visit www.eeforum.net .

USEA is comprised of approximately 150 public and private energy-related organizations, corporations and government agencies. It represents the United States on the World Energy Council.
