USF Dugan Keeps on Shipping; Flattened Terminal Not a Problem
WICHITA, Kan.--June 3, 2003--On May 8, 2003, a tornado struck and completely destroyed USF Dugan's (www.usfc.com) Oklahoma City terminal. USF Dugan is an operating company of USF Corporation. Fortunately no one was injured. Despite the extraordinary damage to the 30-door terminal, USF Dugan was able to continue operations. In the days immediately following the tornado's destruction, shipping operations were handled by USF Dugan's Tulsa and Dallas terminals, the Dallas division office, and the Wichita general office. This allowed USF Dugan to complete all scheduled shipments in the pipeline on time and according to customers' specifications. The Oklahoma City terminal handles approximately 500,000 pounds of outbound freight each day."The aftermath of this terrible event has shown us what people are really made of," said Walter D. Ainsworth, USF Dugan President and Chief Executive Officer. "Our employees in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Dallas, and Wichita pitched in under very difficult circumstances to make sure our customers would have uninterrupted service. And our customers have been incredibly supportive, pledging additional business in an effort to help us rebuild."
The day after the tornado, USF Dugan employees began the clean-up process. Randy Zimmerman, Safety Manager, and Tom Biggs, Vice President-Dallas Division, coordinated their efforts and those of a contractor hired to help clear the terminal site. Within five days, clean up was complete and the rebuilding process had begun. A new 30-door terminal is expected to be open for business within 60 to 90 days from the tornado's destruction. Until it is ready, USF Dugan will continue to meet the needs of its Oklahoma City customers from a temporary location.
