MOWLEM AND STANTON TO TEAM AT PETERSEN MOTORSPORTS / WHITE LIGHTNING
RACING IN ALMS
LAS VEGAS, May 27, 2003 - Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing,
who finished second in a close GT-class battle at the season-opening 12
Hours of Sebring, is pleased to announce that Johnny Mowlem, of
Warfield, England, and Craig Stanton, of Long Beach, California, will be
the team's drivers for the remainder of the 2003 American Le Mans Series
(ALMS) season. The Las Vegas-based operation will contest the majority
of the remaining ALMS races in the #31 Westward Ho Casino/ MMPIE/ PAWS
Porsche 911 GT3 RS beginning with the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma
presented by Napa Valley Marriott Hotel and Spa on June 27. In addition
to the ALMS effort, Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing is
teaming with Alex Job Racing in an assault on GT-class honors at the 24
Hours of Le Mans, June 14-15.
"After Sebring we had to make some decisions that were very tough. But
we have decided on Craig Stanton and Johnny Mowlem as our drivers for
the rest of the year," announced Michael Petersen, owner of Petersen
Motorsports while at the Porsche race factory in Weissach, Germany. "I
was very impressed with Craig at Florida and have watched him for
several years. I feel that with Johnny and Craig we will give people a
hard time and a true battle to the finish, which we are all looking
forward to. I just hope that the competition can keep up with us!"
Mowlem, who was announced as the team's full-season driver in February,
has an ALMS GT-class victory and several podium finishes to his credit.
He has been the lead-driver for Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning
Racing since 2001. Mowlem has three starts at the 24 Hours of Le Mans,
has raced at the 12 Hours of Sebring four times with two second-place
finishes and has chased the checkered flag in two 24 Hours at Daytona
earning a second-place overall earlier this season.
Stanton joined Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing at Sebring
after three previous seasons racing select GT-class cars in the ALMS for
other operations. A multiple-time champion in other series, Stanton has
a second and a third-place finish in three Sebring starts.
"I think Johnny and Craig will be a great duo," offered Dale White, team
manager, from Europe where the team is preparing for the 24 Hours of Le
Mans. "They have driven together before as teammates and work well
together. I am excited to have a new Porsche 911 GT3 RS for them after
Le Mans. Our old car was good but it is always nice to start with a
fresh new machine."
Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing began operation in the late
1980s competing in off-road endurance events. The duo of White and
Petersen joined to win over 50 off-road truck victories including
three-consecutive overall wins at the Baja 1000 and Baja 500 and four
SCORE, SNORE and SODA championships. Since introducing the team to
sports car racing, the effort has scored victories in the Trans-Am
Series, Speed Challenge Series and endurance sports car wins at Watkins
Glen and at the Rolex 24 of Daytona.
