Bobby Sak Second On The Podium For The Lime Rock Grand Prix
Hayner recovers to capture fourth
Lime Rock Park, Conn. – May 26, 2003 – Driving a near perfect race,
Rookie of the Year contender, Bobby Sak, drove the #10 Revolution
Motorsports Corvette to a 2nd place finish in the Lime Rock Grand Prix,
round four of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup. Sak
convincingly held off all challengers to take his first career podium
finish in the rain soaked event.
“To be honest, I was pleased to see the rain,” said Sak. We have a
great rain set-up and I knew we’d be fast. The car was awesome. I was
so confident with what the crew gave me… considering the track
conditions; I could put the car anywhere.”
Bobby spent quite a few laps behind 2000 TA Champion, Brian Simo.
“I’m not sure what was going on with the #3 car,” said Bobby. “I really
think I was held up and worked extremely hard trying to find a way
around him. At one point we had a little contact and he spun in front
of me. It certainly wasn’t intentional… and I understand the officials
not wanting to make a blocking call under those conditions. He “brake
checked” me a few times… fortunately it was reported by corner workers
who supported my position regarding the incident. I’m not sure I could
have caught Johnny [#64 Miller] but I do believe I was held up.”
“I wasn’t thrilled when the last yellow came out,” Bobby continued.
“Johnny and I were pretty much out alone and I was anticipating
finishing under time. Then when it came over the radio that we would
take the white and green flag I got real concerned about Jorge. He’s
been running great lately and I knew he’d be putting the pressure on
for the re-start. As much as I wanted to think about pressuring Johnny,
it became more important to make sure I didn’t provide Jorge with any
unearned opportunities.”
Stu Hayner, driver of the #2 Trenton Forging/GMAC Commercial Finance
made the best of a bad situation. Hayner made a phenomenal move at the
start and immediately went to the front of the pack. He lead the first
13 laps before finding an oil patch on the entrance to the “Big Bend”
in turn one and had to gather the car up on the escape road.
“The left front just locked up and I became a passenger,” said Hayner.
“I’m not sure what it was, but after that, we had our work cut out for
us. I felt bad for the crew because they had put a great car under me.
I feel an advantage in wet conditions and the crew set the car up just
the way I like it. We were fast and we had great handling. Later in the
race I had worked my way back up to fifth and then the motor went away.
It felt like I was running on seven cylinders… maybe less. Getting back
to finish fourth was truly a blessing.”
Hayner moves into fourth place in the Championship battle while Sak
moves into sixth. Jorge Diaz leads Bobby in the Rookie championship by
just 11 points.
