Hales Corners Speedway Complete Story 05-24-2003

Rick Scheffler Romps To
UMP LM Win At Hales
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., May 24--Rick Scheffler ran away to a dominating victory
on Saturday night at the Hales Corners Speedway, leading 26 laps in the night's
30-lap UMP late model main event.
Don Scheffler topped the night's sportsmen feature, with Spencer Frost
emerging victorious in the modified main and Jim Reinhardt winning the Hales
Whales headliner. Aaron Stolp won the night's 4-cylinder Mud Puppies
nightcapper.
Bill Rezutek led the opening three laps of the 30-lap UMP late model
feature before a spin in turn two by Turk Letizia put the field under yellow.
When the race resumed, Rick Scheffler shot by Rezutek exiting turn two to take
the lead.
Rezutek quickly dropped back through the running order as Scott Specht
moved to second, with Chris Carlson third, Illinois Invader Frank Reaber fourth
and Jimmy Watson fifth by lap 10. Scheffler began to lap the tailenders on
lap 11 and gradually built a healthy advantage.
With the race closing in on a finish, Specht began to narrow the gap to
the front-running car of Scheffler. Specht needed a yellow to tighten the
field back up and make a race of it, but he never got it. Scheffler worked his
advantage to the checkered flag with Specht settling for runner-up honors.
Carlson was third, with Reaber fourth and Watson fifth.
After a caution on the opening lap for debris in turn one following a
Mike Borchardt bounce over the berm, the 20-lap sportsmen main resumed with
polesitter Don Scheffler bursting into the lead ahead of Jeff Tondryk, Jim Fisher,
Dave Gorny and Bob Brent. Scheffler set a blistering pace in the opening laps
and opened up a big lead as his pursuers sorted the running order from second
on back.
Gorny moved to third by lap five and by lap 10 was challenging Tondryk at
every turn for the second spot. Tondryk was able to weather the attack and
get away as Gorny soon found himself busy defending third place from Roger Lee.
Up front, Tondryk finally reeled Scheffler in with five laps to go. In
the final few laps Tondryk rapped Scheffler's rear bumper several times trying
to unnerve the veteran racer, but he was having none of it as he held on to
take the victory. Behind Scheffler and Tondryk, Gorny held Lee at bay for
third, with defending sportsmen track champ Don Sorce Jr. rounding out the top
five.
Spencer Forst won his modified feature of the season, taking the win in
the 20-lap main event over Jim Zdroik. Fast qualifier Jason Zdroik was next
across the line in third, with Brian Crapser fourth and former late model
competitor Mark Brunner a solid fifth.
Jim Reinhardt drove to victory in the 20-lap Hales Whales headliner.
Reinhardt was trailed at the finish by Chris Hoedel in second, with Al Tietyen,
J.J. Weickowski and Ken Childre rounding out the top five.
On Saturday night, May 31, stock car racing continues at Hales Corners
Speedway with a full program of UMP late model, sportsmen, modified and Hales
Whales racing, plus the 4-cylinder Mud Puppies. The night will be highlighted
by a 30-lap UMP late model feature plus the opening round of the popular annual
Borchardt Speed - Automotive Sportsmen Triple Crowned, topped by a 35-lap
main event. Time trials are at 6:15 p.m., with racing immediately following
qualifying. Hales Corners Speedway is located on Hwy. 100, one half-mile south of
