Astronaut David Wolf Presents Delco Remy Rings to Indy Drivers

ANDERSON, Ind., May 24, 2003 -- On behalf of Delco Remy International, Inc. (DRI), Indianapolis native and astronaut Dr. David Wolf presented each Indianapolis 500 driver with the Delco Remy starter ring. The ring presentation was part of the Public Drivers meeting at the Bombardier Pagoda today.

Thomas J. Snyder, President and CEO, of Delco Remy International, introduced Wolf, "As a hero in space presenting to the heroes of racing." This is the third year that Delco Remy has presented the drivers with rings. This ring ceremony underscores Delco Remy's long-standing relationship with the Indianapolis 500 as Remy Electric, the company, presented a Remy trophy to Jules Goux, the race winner, in 1913. At the conclusion of the ring ceremony, pole sitter Helio Castroneves presented Wolf with the signature print autographed by all 33 drivers.

Wolf attended North Central High School in Indianapolis before graduating from Purdue University with distinction from the honors curriculum in electrical engineering. He also holds a degree in medicine from Indiana University.

From 1980-1983, Wolf served as a research scientist at the Indianapolis Center for Advanced Research before becoming part of NASA's Medical Sciences Division. In 1990, he was chosen to become an astronaut and qualified for space flight in July of 1991. Since that time, Dr. Wolf has logged three separate missions, including a long duration stay on the Russian Mir space station. Wolf's most recent trip into space was in October of 2002 allowed him to perform work on the International Space Station's electrical and cooling systems.
