ABL Urges Senate to Avoid One-Size-Fits-All Solutions to Drunk Driving
WASHINGTON, May 22, 2003 -- As the Senate reviews reauthorization of The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century (TEA-21), lobbying efforts are at work to pursue further sanctions, rather than incentives, to force states, governors, legislators and highway safety officials to accept Washington's one-size-fits-all solution to drunk driving.
Anti-alcohol organizations continue to broaden definitions of "drunk driving" while ignoring other known "impairments" to highway safety. Calls for more invasive roadblocks seek to target, harass and threaten the privacy of responsible, law-abiding citizens and are ineffective in combating the true drunk driving problem -- the hardcore, repeat drunk driving offender.
