Promoter Test Day
With more than 60 cars from the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge
Touring and GT classes practicing on the 2.459-mile Mosport International
Raceway today in advance of Saturday's qualifying for Round 2 of the 2003
series to be held on Sunday, BMW Team PTG found the track a bit crowded and
elected to approach the first two 30-minute sessions very carefully.
PTG newcomer Justin Marks' second session ended with a damaged front end
after sliding on oil and off the track. The crew repaired his No. 80 BMW M3
and he was able to take a few laps with the Touring Cars in their last
session. The organizers chose to split the groups for the second two
sessions and the Team PTG BMW M3s of Bill Auberlen, Boris Said and Hans
Stuck made good use of the a clearer track to improve their M3s - all three
drivers recording lap times within 10ths of seconds of each other.
HANS STUCK, NO. 8 BMW M3:
"Due to a visa problem I could not come to the Summit Point test last week,
but Boris said my new M3 was a good one and he was absolutely right. You
need to be sure of what your car is doing over the hills on this track and
this M3 is right there. 1974 was the first year I raced here and I still
enjoy coming to Mosport, as it is one of the last driver's circuits left.
Just don't ask me how old I am."
BORIS SAID, NO. 6 BMW M3:
"We are working on the balance, trying to find what the car likes and by
tomorrow we should find what we want to race with. It was busy in the first
sessions so we could only work on one corner at a time, so it was nice to be
able to put a complete lap together in the last session. All those cars were
good practice for the Nurburgring (Germany) 24-Hour race in a few weeks,
though."
BILL AUBERLEN, NO. 7 BMW M3:
"We have hardly had to touch the M3 here after our two tests at VIR and
Summit Point and that's exactly what we need. The cars have to be reliable,
strong and as quick as we can be every lap. You can see other cars fading
over time, but the M3 is there lap after lap."
JUSTIN MARKS, NO. 80 BMW M3:
"Right out of the box the M3 feels very good; the balance and set-up are
right there. The only issue I have right now is a bit of a push, but we will
get it. I think we have a good handle on today. I feel confident with the
gear box now, this being only the second time I have driven these cars."
BMW Team PTG serves doughnuts at BMW Canada
BMW Team PTG and drivers Bill Auberlen and Boris Said made a visit to BMW
Group Canada in Toronto on Tuesday, May 13, on their way to this weekend's
round 2 of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed GT Championships at Mosport
International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario.
BMW Canada hosted Team PTG at a company barbecue that saw over 200 employees
enjoy a little more than great food as Bill Auberlen brought dessert in the
form of doughnuts (circles on the asphalt produced by breaking the tires
loose with the throttle) he performed in his No. 7 M3 in the parking lot.
"It was a wonderful barbecue and I think it was very great for everyone to
meet the team and see how well our BMWs are prepared," said Auberlen. "Tom
(Milner, team owner) fired up my M3 for them and I ended up doing some large
doughnuts in the parking lot. To get authorization to go out and show off a
bit is every race driver's dream. I think everyone had a great time and I
hope many of them come to the race so we can show them how well the M3
performs on the track"
After signing autographs, Said and Auberlen raffled off some new PTG caps
and one lucky employee won the use of an M3 coupe for the weekend, making
his drive to this weekend's race at Mosport even more enjoyable.
Team PTG will visit BMW of North America, LLC, in Woodcliff Lake, N.J., on
Tuesday, May 20, on the way to rounds 3 and 4 at Lime Rock Park in the
Northwestern corner of Connecticut.
