The month of June was first declared Black Music Month by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. In 2001, President George W. Bush affirmed June as Black Music Month in a proclamation, stating, "I encourage all Americans to learn more about the contributions of black artists to America's musical heritage and to celebrate their remarkable role in shaping our history and culture." The celebration is a tribute fostered by the Black Music Association, launched in 1978 by black music industry pioneers such as Motown label head Berry Gordy, writers/producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, artist Stevie Wonder, and others. The association's aim was to support the honor, preservation and advancement of black music on a global scale.

Highlights of the month long celebration include exclusive interviews conducted at SIRIUS' New York City studios with notable artists such as Dionne Warwick, Robert Cray, Kenny Lattimore, Deborah Cox, Otis Taylor, Isley Brothers, Oleta Adams, Common, Roy Jones, Jr., Kool & The Gang, Bobby Short, Kirk Whalum, Luther Vandross, Nivea, Kenny Gamble, Otis Day, Shaggy, Neptunes/NERD, Melba Moore, Neville Brothers, and Buju Banton.
