Automotive Interior Trim Market Growing to $22 Billion by 2008, According to CSM Worldwide

DETROIT, May 13, 2003 -- The combined North American and European automotive interior trim market will grow to $22 billion by 2008, according to research conducted by CSM Worldwide. The growth represents a 30 percent increase from the $17-billion market in 2003. CSM's figures, based on piece- cost estimates, represent the combined market value for the following interior components: door trim panels, floor carpeting, floor consoles, headliners, instrument panels and package trays.

"Much of the dollar-value growth in the interior trim market is attributed to increased instrument panel and cockpit module contenting," said Don Montroy, CSM North American component market analyst. "However, other components such as headliners and floor consoles are also becoming more highly contented and will also drive overall value higher."

Of further note in the market is the control that the top suppliers exert on the market, according to CSM. For 2003, 87 suppliers contribute components as part of the $17-billion interior trim market. The market, however, is dominated by a select group of suppliers. Nearly $11 billion (or 64 percent) of the $17-billion market comes from the top five suppliers: Faurecia, Visteon, Johnson Controls, Collins & Aikman, and Lear.

"These top interior suppliers grew out of the heavy merger and acquisition activity of the last 10 years," said Andrew Herzig, CSM European component market analyst. "With buying activity slowing, these suppliers now have to prove that they can survive with more than just a large market share -- they have to provide additional value to the automakers in areas such as design, engineering and logistics."

The rank order (by estimated dollar value) for the top ten suppliers for the combined North American and European interior trim market (door trim panels, floor carpeting, floor consoles, headliners, instrument panels and package trays) is as follows:

  1) Faurecia
  2) Visteon
  3) Johnson Controls
  4) Collins & Aikman
  5) Lear
  6) Delphi
  7) Intier
  8) CalsonicKansei
  9) Venture
  10) Grupo Antolin
