DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund Helps Avondale Students With Real-World Science Project

Chrysler Group Employees, 300 Students, Test Water Quality at Clinton River

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 13 -- Armed with test tubes, tape measures and thermometers, 300 high school students and their teachers from Avondale High School, will participate in a real-world science project along the banks of the Clinton River today. The one-day event, developed in association with the Clinton River Watershed Council (CRWC) aims to help determine the quality of the local river water.

The class project requires students to collect water samples from the Clinton River. The CRWC will then test the samples and render findings about the quality of the river water. To aid the project, the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund is sponsoring the test kits that will be used. Additionally, the Chrysler Group's Central Facilities Environmental team will help the teachers demonstrate the proper way to collect and store water samples in order to obtain uncompromised results. If the water is found to need purification, the CRWC may propose solutions to create a cleaner water system.

"We are excited to be involved in this initiative," said Eric Lee, part of Chrysler Group's Central Facilities team. "Students will apply what they've learned in the classroom to an important project that will significantly impact the future of our local rivers and streams."

For the past several years, Avondale High School students have collected water samples for testing by the Council. The project is an initiative by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division to encourage the development of sports fishing opportunities near urban areas.

In addition to the Clinton River Watershed Council, the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund supports various environmental initiatives, such as those related to the Nature Conservancy, the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation, Resources for the Future and the Anacostia Watershed Society -- a Washington D.C.-area river project similar to the Clinton River Watershed Council.

Since its inception, the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund, the charitable arm of Chrysler Group, has contributed more than $352 million to non profit charitable organizations throughout the U.S.
