Warren Johnson Slots Sixth for his Home Race in Atlanta
Event: Twenty-Third Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals
Presented by Pontiac
Location: Atlanta Dragway
Commerce, GA
Day/Date: Saturday May 3, 2003
After battling rainy weather on Friday, racers arriving at Atlanta Dragway were relieved to encounter cloudy skies on Saturday, which allowed the final day of qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac to run as scheduled. In addition, the atmospheric conditions were drastically improved, creating major changes on Sunday's final eliminations ladder.
Warren Johnson in the GM Performance Parts Grand Am made steady improvement throughout qualifying, bettering his elapsed time on every run. On his final attempt, Johnson blasted down the quarter-mile in 6.849 seconds with a top speed of 201. 82 mph, earning the sixth starting position at his "home" race track.
"We're pleased that we were able to pick up our performance on every run. Our second run was a little better, but not by much, so made wholesale changes based on what had happened during our first two runs, as well as information gathered in testing here. Our GM Performance Parts Grand Am obviously responded pretty well, as we were one of only four cars to run a 6.84 in that last session. We've obviously taken a step in the right direction, now it's just a matter of trying to improve on it for tomorrow."
