Johnson Controls Recognized by General Motors With Automaker's 2002 Supplier of the Year Award

Leading global manufacturer of interior systems and batteries cited for outstanding performance

PLYMOUTH, Mich., April 29 -- Johnson Controls, Inc. , a leading global supplier of automotive interior systems and batteries, was named as a General Motors Supplier of the Year for its overall business performance in providing the automaker with parts and services during 2002. The prestigious award was presented to officials from Johnson Controls during GM's annual Supplier of the Year ceremonies held on Saturday, April 12 in Miami, Florida.

Detroit-based General Motors is the world's largest vehicle manufacturer and sold more than 8.5 million cars and trucks in 2002.

For eight consecutive years, Johnson Controls has gained GM Supplier of the Year award recognition. The company has been named among GM's top suppliers nine times overall.

"Johnson Controls is representative of the companies GM expects to grow with us as we seek to increase market share," said Bo Andersson, vice president, GM Worldwide Purchasing Production Control & Logistics. "The company's performance and contributions have been critical in helping GM to become the industry's low cost producer of high quality vehicles. They serve as a role model for other suppliers," he said.

The GM Supplier of the Year award began as a global program in 1992. Award winners are selected by a global team of GM executives from purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and logistics who base their decisions on supplier performance in quality, service, technology and price. This year, General Motors honored 70 suppliers for their excellence throughout 2002.

Johnson Controls supplies a variety of seating, interior systems and batteries for GM vehicles manufactured in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Some of the most noted GM models featuring products supplied by Johnson Controls include the Buick Rendezvous, Cadillac Seville, Chevrolet S-10, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Chevrolet Venture, GMC Envoy, GMC Sierra, Hummer H2, Opel Astra, Opel Zafira, Pontiac Montana, Pontiac Grand Prix and Pontiac Vibe.

Two Johnson Controls joint-venture companies also were recognized with GM Supplier of the Year awards at the April 12 ceremony. Bridgewater Interiors, a joint venture between Johnson Controls and Detroit-based Epsilon L.L.C., gained Supplier of the Year Award honors for the second year in a row. In addition, Shanghai Yanfeng Johnson Controls Seating Company Ltd., a joint- venture operation of Johnson Controls and Shanghai Yanfeng Visteon Automotive Trim Systems Company, Ltd. of China, was presented with its first Supplier of the Year award.

Established in 1998, Bridgewater Interiors produces seating systems for General Motors' Cadillac DeVille models and overhead systems for Cadillac Seville vehicles. The minority joint venture company operates a 175,000- square-foot facility in Detroit, Michigan.

Shanghai Yanfeng Johnson Controls Seating Company Ltd. -- which was founded in 1997 -- manufactures seat systems, trim covers, foam seat pads and seat mechanisms for General Motors, Volkswagen, Ford, Nissan and Kia models at six plants in China. GM models supplied by the operation include the Buick Century, Regal, Sail and GL8 van.
