AFTER TWO OF FOUR QUALIFYING SESSIONS
SCOTTY CANNON, OAKLEY FUNNY CAR, ended up No. 11 after two qualifying
sessions, with his 4.960/260.86 pass in the second run, despite a flame-up
under the hood. He pedaled it in the first run to a 5.030/309.84 lap when
there was a threat of rain, which never materialized.
"The first run I pedaled it and probably shouldn't have because we were
afraid of Mother Nature and the rain, not knowing what it was going to do.
The last run it was running real good; we were probably going to run an .84.
It broke a pushrod or an adjustor on the valve. When it does that it blows
fire back up through the blower, explodes and some fuel gets underneath the
hood. It's not a big deal. All we can do is put it all back together and go
back up there and try to run it. I don't think I'd make a change. There's no
car adjustment or anything we'll do for the next run. It was just one of
those gremlins that got right in the middle of when we should have shined.
We're getting closer; we're doing OK."
