K. J. Will Start Second in Houston

Event: 16th Annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals
Location: Houston Raceway Park
       Baytown, TX
Day/Date: Saturday April 12, 2003

The second day of qualifying for the O'Reilly Spring Nationals provided clear blue skies and warmer temperatures, which, although ideal for the sellout crowd in attendance, prevented any major changes in the Pro Stock field, which was already the quickest in the category's history. As a result, Kurt Johnson's 6.726-second, 205.57 mph effort from Friday evening remained his run of record, and placed his ACDelco Cavalier second on Sunday's final eliminations ladder.

As the conditions precluded a challenge for the top position, Johnson used his final two qualifying attempts to work on his set-up for race day.

"Today we pretty much worked on our race day set up. This morning, our ACDelco Cavalier made a good run with that 6.76, but tonight, I think we found out what not to do, as we had a lot of tire shake in that right hand lane.

"What we learned today, we'll use for tomorrow, when it's supposed to be even warmer. We'll have to look at our notes and find where we ran on a hot track with this car. I'm also concerned about the right hand lane, because there were several cars having problems over there. Our game plan is to put the set-up that we ran the '.76 with back in and go from there, trying to stay in the left lane all day. We're looking to be working very late tomorrow afternoon."
