Dorricott Racing - Provisional Qual Report
LUIS DIAZ THIRD FASTEST IN PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING
FOR SUNDAY'S TOYOTA ATLANTIC RACE AT LONG BEACH
LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 11, 2003) - Dorricott Racing's Luis Diaz,
of Mexico City, threw down blistering laps amidst heavy competition and
qualified third fastest in provisional qualifying for Sunday's second round
of the 12-race Toyota Atlantic Championship at the Toyota Grand Prix of
Long Beach.
Diaz clocked a best lap of 1:17.613 (91.284 mph) around the
1.968-mile, 11-turn seaside street circuit. Going into tomorrow's final
qualifying session, Diaz will be looking to claim his second consecutive
Toyota Atlantic pole position after taking the pole at
the season opener in Monterrey. Should he take the top qualifying position,
it would be the fourth pole of his Toyota Atlantic career. He is looking
for his third career Toyota Atlantic race victory this weekend.
Provisional pole honors went to Aaron Justus. Justus ran a Toyota
Atlantic track record of 1:17.260 (91.701 mph) to better the previous
track record set by Canadian David Rutledge in 2001 at 1:18.168 (90.636
mph). In total, the top six qualifiers today turned laps in excess of the
former track record. In the process, Justus earned one championship point
and guaranteed himself a Toyota Atlantic career best starting position, as
he will start no worse than second on Sunday. His previous best starting
position was 10th, which he earned in the Atlantic season-opener at
Monterrey, Mexico, three weeks ago.
"It's very close," said Diaz. "It's a bit like Monterrey because
there a many drivers capable of winning the pole. This time Aaron leads the
pack. My team has set another good car so if I can avoid getting struck by
another car my chances for a podium are probably pretty good."
Building on the momentum of a second place finish at Monterrey,
Canadian
Jonathan Macri placed his car second on the provisional grid after posting
a best lap of 1:17.549 (91.359 mph).
