Cummins Inc. First To Offer Low Emission Engines in Support of EPA School Bus Program

COLUMBUS, Ind.--April 8, 2003--Today, Cummins Inc. affirmed its continued support of a major initiative by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to substantially reduce emissions from school buses across the United States. The EPA's Clean School Bus USA initiative will seek federal funding and industry technology support to retrofit existing school bus engines with new, emission reduction technology.
Cummins is the first and only manufacturer with diesel engines certified and compliant with the new EPA standards for the bus industry. Through its joint venture, Cummins Westport Inc., it also provides natural gas-fueled engines certified almost 30% below the standard, the lowest emissions engines available today.
"Cummins has demonstrated its leadership in emissions reduction and combustion technologies by being the first to certify engines that have now accumulated over 51 million miles of environmentally-friendly service since they were introduced last year," said John Wall, Cummins Chief Technical Officer. "Combined with our Fleetguard Emissions Solutions business, we have the best emissions technology for both engines and exhaust aftertreatment systems in the world," Wall added.
The EPA unveiled the Clean School Bus USA initiative at events yesterday in Philadelphia, PA. and Washington, D.C., attended by EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman and industry leaders, including officials from Cummins Inc. The EPA program will help school districts and school bus fleet operators either replace older buses with newer models or install low emission control devices on existing buses.
