Wind Tunnel Test Brings Parity to Trans-Am Series

WIND TUNNEL TEST BRINGS PARITY TO TRANS-AM SERIES
LANSING, Mich. ‹ A new hood panel and nose has been approved for Ford
Mustangs competing in the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich® Tires Cup. The
new aerodynamic pieces were approved after an extensive wind-tunnel test at
the Driveability Test Facility in Allen Park, Mich.
The test was part of joint effort being undertaken by the Trans-Am Series
technical staff, ACS Express Racing of Huntington Beach, Calif.,
Rocketsports Racing of Lansing, Mich., Ford Motor Co., and Livonia,
Mich.-based Soenen Motorsports.
The most recent test followed one undertaken earlier this year, which also
tested the Jaguar XKR and Chevrolet Corvette.
Trans-Am Series Technical Director David King was pleased with the results.
³The test went very smoothly,² said King. ³We were able to accomplish our
goal‹to bring the Mustang up in total downforce‹and we¹re pretty pleased
with the numbers. The goal was to bring parity among the different marques,
and we think that goal has been met.
³We were able to get a lot of cooperation to test the Mustang,² added King.
³Since ACS Express is a West Coast team, we wanted to accommodate those
folks and found a way to complete the test without them bringing their staff
and their car all the way back here a second time. So, we used a Soenen
Motorsports Mustang. The personnel at Rocketsports Racing made the necessary
changes to the nose prior to it being fitted to the car for testing.²
The Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich® Tires Cup features closed-fendered,
production-based, V-8-powered sports cars. The Trans-Am Series is America¹s
oldest continuously running sports car racing series and celebrates its 38th
anniversary in 2003.
The next Trans-Am Series race is scheduled for April 13, during the Toyota
Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend. The race will air on a same-day,
tape-delayed basis on PEE Channel at 9 p.m. ET.
