Texas frustrates Team Target
FT. WORTH, Texas (March 30, 2003) --- It was a frustrating day for Casey
Mears and Team Target at Texas Motor Speedway. A few altercations early in
the Samsung/Radio Shack 500 put the #41 Target Dodge a few laps down and out
of contention for a win. Mears finished the race in 27th position and
currently sits 34th in championship points.
Mears, a Raybestos Rookie candidate, started the race in 26th position
behind teammate and fellow rookie Jamie McMurray. Mears' Target Dodge was
fast at the start until the team ran into a few problems: Mears got into the
back of the #29 car on a restart causing minor damage to the Dodge's front
nose, the Target Dodge ran out of gas earlier than expected forcing Mears to
coast into the pits and lose track position, and Team Target pitted under
green right before the caution came out.
"You learn something from every race with the car and I do," Mears said.
"It was good to get to run all the laps today. This place is working in, as
far as the second groove goes. It was getting better and better. On the
restarts I could really pass a lot of guys up high so it's getting better.
As of right now, it's a tough place to pass because you loose your nose so
bad."
"We ran out of gas about 10 laps earlier than we thought that we were going
to and that put us two laps down," Mears said. "And then we pitted again
and the caution came out. It seems like it happens every weekend, I don't
know why. We got three laps down there. We ran good and had a good car
things just didn't work out for us."
Mears finished the race in 27th position and currently sits 34th in
championship points. Ryan Newman, driver of the #12 Alltel Dodge, won his
first race of the season and the first win for Dodge in 2003.
Team Target heads to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend for the Aaron's
499. The race will be broadcast live on April 6 on FOX television and MRN
radio.
