Detroit Diesel Corporation Recalls Workers

DETROIT, March 26 -- Today Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) announced that in the past months it has recalled 200 workers to increase production for the Series 60 engine. Two shifts have resumed and line rates are set at 70 daily for each shift. The 10,000th Series 60 equipped with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is scheduled to be built in April.

"We have received orders from several hundred fleets and the order backlog exceeds 11,000 engines. Not only have we resumed two shift operation, we have also gone to nine hour shifts in order to meet the demand. Now that fleets have had a chance to put some miles on these Series 60s equipped with EGR, they are finding that the engine performance and driveability are excellent, there are no new maintenance procedures, recommended oil change intervals remain the same, and warranty coverages have not changed. Most importantly, fuel economy of EGR equipped engines is proving to be about the same as our competitors' non-EGR engines," said Mark Bara, Vice President - On Highway Engine Sales.

Detroit Diesel Corporation, headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, is engaged in the design, manufacture, sale and service of heavy-duty diesel and alternative fuel engines, automotive diesel engines and engine-related products. The company offers a complete line of engines from 22 to 13,000 horsepower for the on-highway, off-road and automotive markets and is a QS- 9000 certified company. Detroit Diesel services these markets directly and through a worldwide network of more than 2,700 authorized distributor and dealer locations. Detroit Diesel is a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler AG, the world's leading manufacturer of heavy-duty diesel truck engines. Within DaimlerChrysler AG, DDC is part of the Powersystems Business Unit.
