FIGGE EARNS TOP-10 START AT SEASON-OPENER IN MONTERREY

MONTERREY, MEXICO (March 22, 2003) –Alex Figge, of Santa Barbara, Calif.,
today qualified eighth for Round One of the 2003 CART Toyota Atlantic
Championship at Fundidora Park.

Following a superb qualifying session on Friday, in which he was third on
the provisional grid, Figge took to the 2.104-mile road course in the early
afternoon Saturday. In sunny and hot conditions, Figge immediately began
searching for a gap in traffic to post a fast lap. On lap 6, Figge began a
string of four laps, in which he consecutively bettered his best time,
moving into fourth. Just past the halfway mark of the 40-minute session,
Figge pitted to put on fresh tires. With the increased grip provided by the
new tires, Figge set about bettering his fast time, unfortunately within a
lap Figge was forced to pit with a broken Gurney flap. After losing valuable
track time for repairs, Figge rejoined qualifying determined to move up the
charts. On lap 22, he posted a fast lap of 1:25.669 (88.415 mph) and looked
to be in position to post a very quick lap late in the session. With starter
ready to through the checkered flag, Figge began his final lap of
qualifying, unfortunately the fast lap was quickly aborted when a car spun
in front him. At the conclusion of qualifying, Figge, driving the No. 69
Pacific Coast Motorsports/Patrick Racing Toyota Swift 0.14a, was eighth
quickest.

"The car was getting better as the session progressed," said Figge. "I lost
a bunch laps right after I put on fresh tires, when I had a problem with the
rear wing. At the end of qualifying I had a great car and was on a very fast
lap, when a car spun in front of me, ruining my lap. Hopefully I'll be able
to work my way through the field during the race."

The season-opening round of the 2003 CART Toyota Atlantic Championship gets
underway, Sunday, March 23, at 10:30 a.m. (local time). The race will be one
hour in duration, approximately 32 laps.
