Diaz Fifth in Prov. Qual. at Monterrey
DIAZ FIFTH IN PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING
MONTERREY, Mexico (March 21, 2003) - Luis Diaz was fifth fastest in
Friday's provisional qualifying for round one of the 12-race 2003 Toyota
Atlantic Championship at the Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix. Diaz posted a best
lap of 1:27.655 (86.411 mph) driving for 2002 Toyota Atlantic champions
Dorricott Racing. Diaz finished fifth after starting from the pole position
one year ago, and goes into Saturday's final qualifying session looking to
duplicate last year's performance in qualifying.
Joey Hand placed his car on the provisional pole as time expired in
the session with a fast lap of 1:26.519 (87.546 mph). Hand's time eclipsed
the previous track record of 1:27.089 (86.973 mph) set by Diaz in last
year's inaugural Toyota Atlantic event at Monterrey's Fundidora Park. In
the process, Hand earned his first championship point of the season, and
guaranteed himself a front row starting spot for the race.
"We have a lot of work ahead if we are going to improve our
set-up," said Diaz. "The car was too loose to make it into the top three
best times. I'll analyze the data with my engineers and we'll make
appropriate changes. We naturally hoped to be faster than we were because
the track was easier with rubber laid down from morning practices. We
simply have to step our pace to a higher level and that will make us more
competitive in final qualifying."
Saturday's schedule in Monterrey calls for a 30-minute practice
session beginning at 8:20 a.m. locally, and will be followed by a 40-minute
final qualifying session beginning at 12:50 p.m. (CT). The green flag on
the Tecate/Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix and the 2003 CART Toyota Atlantic
Championship season is scheduled to wave at 10:30 a.m. (CT) local time on
Sunday morning.
