Campbell and Hengeveld Run Away With San Felipe 250
SCORE Desert Series
Round 1: San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico
March 14-15, 2003
Defending SCORE champions Johnny Campbell and Steve Hengeveld kicked off
their 2003 campaign by running away with the San Felipe 250 on their
XR650R. In doing so, they led a Honda romp at the first of three
motorcycle/ATV events in the SCORE Desert Series, with the red machines
taking four of the five motorcycle class wins and all three ATV categories
in the 228-mile sprint.
After drawing the second starting position, Hengeveld seized control of the
race less than a mile after leaving the small fishing town of San Felipe,
which sits on the edge of the Sea of Cortez in Baja California. With each
passing mile, Hengeveld put time on the competition. Campbell did the same
when he took his turn on the bike.
"It went really smooth," Campbell said. "It was easy, almost. But there was
the typical craziness in the last five miles of the race with booby traps
and locals trying to touch you as you rode by," he revealed.
Their time of four hours, six minutes, 14 seconds gave them a 55.56
mile-per-hour average and a 17-minute lead over runners-up Quinn Cody and
Andy Grider on a second XR650R. Christopher Blais soloed his big XR to
third overall motorcycle, third in Class 22, in 4:39:50.
Campbell's latest San Felipe victory marked his fifth overall and his sixth
class-leading performance in this event. For Hengeveld, it was his
third-straight San Felipe win and the second with Campbell as partner.
