BARBER CAPTURES FIRST CAREER WIN AT SEBRING

SEBRING, FLA. (March 13, 2003) –Westley Barber, of Saffron Walden, England,
won Round One of the 2003 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship at Sebring
International Raceway. Completing the top-three was Jonathan Bomarito, of
Camarillo, Calif., and Andy Brumbaugh, of Blythewood, S.C. Chris Dona, of
Sandown, N.H., won the American Continental Championship class.
Following qualifying for race two of the doubleheader, the Zetec
Championship took the green flag for the season-opener late in the
afternoon. At the start, the field went four abreast down the front
straightaway. Falling back to second, Barber, retook the lead in the early
stages of the opening lap. Behind the leaders, Charlie Kimball struck the
tire wall in turn, bringing out a full-course caution. On the lap 4 restart,
Barber, driving the No. 3 Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, held the lead
into turn one, while Bomarito and Brumbaugh battled for position. As the lap
progressed, Barber began to stretch his lead, while Bomarito, in the No. 23
Valley Financial PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, held off the hard charging
Brumbaugh, driving the No. 86 Andy LLC/Corby Concepts Cape Motorsports Van
Diemen Ford. Following five laps with the lead trio unchanged, the field was
bunched together, when a full-course caution was displayed for Jeff Sakowicz
striking the tire barrier in turn one. After one lap for cleanup, the field
was given the green, for a one-lap dash to the finish. Barber got a good
jump on the restart and maintained his lead to the checkered flag, capturing
his first career Zetec Championship win by 0.978 second.
“It’s been a dream start to the season,” said Barber, who has the pole
position for Friday’s Round Two race. “I was conservative at the start,
which cost me the lead, but I learned from that. On the restarts I made sure
I did better. I really got thank Cape Motorsports for all their work.”
“What a way to start my Zetec career,” said Bomarito. “I had good clean
run, but it was tough race. I had a great battle with Andy [Brumbaugh].”
“It was important to get a good start to the season,” said Brumbaugh. “I’ve
been working on my starts and it paid off, as I was able to gain a couple
positions going into turn one.”
“The start was a little crazy,” said Dona. “I established a good gap on the
other ACC car, but it came down to that one-lap dash to the finish, where I
was able to hold him off.”
Completing the top-five was Jason Kritikos, of Livermore, Calif., in the
No. 4 Russell Racing Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, and Lawson
Aschenbach, of Gaithersburg, Md., in the No. 2 King Automotive/M&M Welding
PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford.
