BARBER SWEEPS POLES AT SEBRING
SEBRING, FLA. (March 13, 2003) –Westley Barber, of Saffron Walden, England,
captured the pole for Round Two of the 2003 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship at Sebring international Raceway. Completing the top-three is
Charlie Kimball, of Camarillo, Calif., and Tonis Kasemets, of Mundelein,
Ill. The top ACC qualifier was Chris Dona, of Sandown, N.H.
Run in the early morning, qualifying for the second race of the doubleheader
at Sebring had 26 cars take the green flag. In humid conditions, the drivers
quickly set about posting a fast lap. In the early stages of the 30-minute
session, the top position on the charts rotated frequently between drivers.
After making some minor changes to the car, Barber, driving the No. 3 Cape
Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, posted a time equal to his pole position time
on Wednesday. Almost immediately, Kimball, racing the No. 91 Rentvillas.com
PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, posted a time a mere three tenths of a
second slower, to move into second place. After steadily moving up the
charts, Kasemets, driving the No. 9 FlexOvit/MKIndustries/TMI Team Tonis Van
Diemen Ford, moved into third place late in the session. Just prior to the
checkered flag, Barber bettered his time, breaking the lap record and
securing the pole position. Barber becomes the first driver to sweep both
pole positions at the Sebring doubleheader since Dan Wheldon in 1999.
“It’s very cool to win both pole positions,” said Barber, who won the
British Formula Ford Championship last year. “We made some slight changes
and I was able to run a fast clean lap. Every series is a little different,
so it will be exciting to get my first taste of racing in America.”
“Starting on the front-row in my first Zetec weekend is great,” said
Kimball, who won the June Sprints in the Formula Ford class. “I’m still
learning and I think I left something on the table in qualifying on
Wednesday, so I stepped it up today.”
“The car has been great right ever since we rolled it off the trailer,” said
Kasemets, who is the active win leader, with four wins. “My sponsors have
given me the resources to really challenge for the championship this year. I
can’t for the races to start.”
Completing the top-five is Andy Brumbaugh, of Blythewood, S.C., driving the
No. 86 Andy LLC/Corby Concepts Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford and Lawson
Aschenbach, of Gaithersburg, Md., in the No. 2 King Automotive/M7M Welding
Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford.
