BARBER CAPTURES POLE FOR FIRST ZETEC START
SEBRING, FLA. (March 12, 2003) –Westley Barber, of Saffron Walden, England,
captured the pole for Round One of the 2003 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec
Championship at Sebring international Raceway. Completing the top-three is
Lawson Aschenbach, of Gaithersburg, Md., and Jonathan Bomarito, of Monterey,
Calif. The top ACC qualifier was Chris Dona, of Sandown, N.H.
In hot and humid conditions, 27 Zetec Championship cars took the green lag
for the first qualifying session of the season. Early in the 30-minute
session several cars worked on finding a gap and bringing the new eight and
ten inch tires up to temperature. Continuing the trend he set in testing,
Barber, driving the No. 3 Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, immediately
jumped the top of the charts. As the session progressed, times began to
steadily drop, with several drivers challenging Barber’s time. By the midway
point of the session, Aschenbach, driving the No. 2 King Automotive/M&M
Welding Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, had posted the fastest time.
Racing the No. 23 Valley Financial PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, Bomarito
steadily moving up the charts during qualifying, posted the third best time
late in the session. With less than five minutes remaining the session was
halted, when No. 24 Andrew Prendeville impacted the tire wall in turn 17 and
went upside down. After determining Prendeville was unhurt, the checkered
was thrown, giving Barber the pole position for his first career Zetec
Championship race.
“It’s very exciting to get the pole in my first race,” said Barber, who won
the British Formula Ford Championship last year. “The team and I have really
gotten on well together. I really like the cars and am looking forward to
the race tomorrow.”
“A front-row start is a great way to begin the season,” said Aschenbach, who
captured the Road To Indy Oval Crown Championship last year in his rookie
season. “The Cape Motorsports crew has given me a great car. I think it will
great opening race.”
“I’m thrilled to start third in my first race,” said Bomarito. “Most of the
other guys have a lot more experience than me. “I’m going to try and stay
clean at the start and see how the race progresses.”
Completing the top-five is Tonis Kasemets, of Mundelein, Ill., driving the
No. 9 FlexOvit/TMI Team Tonis Van Diemen Ford and Charlie Kimball, of
Camarillo, Calif., in the No. 91 Rentvillas.com PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen
Ford.
