Delphi's Sebastian Named Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, Inc. Fellow
SAGINAW, Mich., March 6 -- Delphi Corp.'s Dr. Tomy Sebastian, chief scientist, DynamX Center, Saginaw, has been elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE), effective Jan. 1, 2003. Sebastian's contributions to the theory, design and application of permanent magnet motors and drives in the automotive system helped him to earn this great distinction.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) is a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 377,000 individual members in 150 countries. Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, among others.
The Fellow grade is the highest membership level of the IEEE. To become a Fellow, a member must be nominated by others in the organization and the nomination must be sponsored by at least five other Fellows. Twenty judges evaluate hundreds of nominations annually and only one tenth of one percent of IEEE members receive this honor. The nomination recognizes unusual distinctions within the engineering profession.
Sebastian joined Delphi in 1992 and currently leads the Advanced Motor development activities for directional control applications in the automobile. Sebastian has taught graduate engineering courses at the University of Maryland and Ohio State University, and holds an adjunct faculty position at Ohio State University. He has published more than 45 journal, conference and technical reports. He also has been an active member of the IEEE. Currently he is the Paper reviews chair for the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications.
Prior to joining Delphi, Sebastian held the title of senior technical specialist at Black & Decker Corp., where he developed motor control and battery charging systems for power tools. He earned doctorate and master's degrees from the University of Toronto and a bachelor's degree from Regional Engineering College in Calicut, India.
"Tomy is a great asset to Delphi's Innovation Center," said Nady Boules, director, DynamX, Delphi Dynamics & Propulsion Innovation Center. "His contributions to technologies such as electric power steering and large volume brushless motors has helped position Delphi as a leader in steering systems and he deserves the IEEE Fellow distinction. This is a great honor for Tomy and Delphi and we are very proud of his accomplishments."
