Cray Inc. and MCube Announce Advanced Engineering Solution for Automotive Wind Noise

Multiprocessor Version of MCube's RADIOSS-CFD on Cray Supercomputers Cuts Solution Time To One Day, Versus 5-6 Weeks with Current Methods

    Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. and MCube, a leading provider of simulation software to manufacturers worldwide, today announced an advanced engineering solution for alleviating wind noise (aeroacoustics), one of the most daunting challenges faced by automotive designers.
    The new solution is a multiprocessor version of MCube's popular RADIOSS-CFD software designed to run on Cray(TM) supercomputer systems. The combination has reduced solution times for complex aeroacoustic problems to under a day, compared with the 5-6 weeks that is typical in the auto industry today.
    "Wind noise has become a concern for the entire automotive industry, not just the luxury car sector," said Dr. Himanshu Misra, Cray's business manager for design engineering. "Recent cost-cutting and attempts to improve fuel efficiency have reduced the weights of vehicles, making them more vulnerable to wind noise from side mirrors, exhaust systems and other sources. These interdisciplinary problems can't be addressed by traditional fluid flow, acoustic or structural software applications. RADIOSS-CFD running on Cray supercomputers is a reliable, inexpensive alternative to physical prototyping."
    "For clients including DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Honda, PSA Peugeot-Citroen and Siemens, we ran simulations for a wide variety of complex aeroacoustic problems, such as side mirror vibrations, exhaust noise, axial fan noise, automotive muffler design and flow over moon roofs," said Dimitri Nicolopoulos, director of MCube. "In 2002 alone, we published five success stories in conjunction with international conferences. From exhaust systems in Japan and the U.S. to coupled exterior airflow/interior noise in Europe, our clients obtained outstanding results for their complex NVH problems."
    The simulations resulted from an ongoing three-year collaboration between MCube and Cray, according to Nicolopoulos.
    Misra said the new solution is available on Cray T90(TM), Cray SX-6(TM), Cray C90(TM) and Cray SV1ex(TM) supercomputer systems. "Some clients already are considering purchasing a Cray X1 supercomputer because of the RADIOSS-CFD results." Under an ASP agreement between Cray Inc. and MCube, the solution is also available from Cray's secure data center at attractive pricing. "We are already seeing an increased involvement from major automakers and Tier 1 suppliers," he said.
