Delphi's RECOGNITION(TM) Airbag Suppression System Selected by Subaru for Several 2006 Models

KOKOMO, Ind., March 5 -- Delphi has been selected by Subaru of America to provide its innovative RECOGNITION(TM) passive occupant detection system for the Baja, Impreza, Forester, Outback and Legacy models. The three-year supply agreement worth about $48 million starts in the 2006 model year.

Produced by Delphi Delco Electronics Systems, the RECOGNITION(TM) passive occupant detection system helps auto manufacturers meet U.S. Government requirements that an advanced airbag system be on all vehicles sold in the U.S. by 2006.

"Delphi is excited about the opportunity to supply our RECOGNITION(TM) passive occupant detection system for Subaru vehicles," said Jeff Owens, president of Delphi Delco Electronics Systems. "We are equally pleased about the safety benefits that our system brings to the market for our customers and consumers."

The RECOGNITION(TM) passive occupant detection system includes a seat- based sensor, which, in conjunction with the Delphi's Belt Tension Switch, provides information to the airbag computer. The system utilizes a silicone- based weight sensing technology mounted under the passenger seat cushion. Using sophisticated classification algorithms and extensive signal processing, the vehicle airbag controller is notified to deploy or suppress the passenger airbag.

Another key feature of Delphi's RECOGNITION(TM) system is that it requires no interaction by the passenger or driver to make the appropriate deployment decision. In addition the system fits most front passenger seats and does not interfere with the comfort or safety integrity of the seat.

Delphi's RECOGNITION(TM) passive occupant detection system was the first validated technology designed to help automakers meet new U.S. federal standards designed to minimize passenger airbag injuries. The system received the Automotive News and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young 2002 PACE (Premier Automotive Supplier's Contribution to Excellence) Award in the product innovation category.
