Rubber Manufacturers Association Recognizes Federal-Mogul Facilities for Safety Improvement

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Feb. 28 -- Federal-Mogul Corporation's commitment to employee health and safety has been recognized and rewarded by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).

Three Federal-Mogul facilities including Frankfort, Indiana; Summerton, South Carolina; and Van Wert, Ohio, recently achieved an industry award for achieving significant improvements in employee health and safety over the last year.

RMA presented its Safety and Health Improvement Program (SHIP) award at the organization's annual meeting in Palm Springs, California, on February 23. The award was created in 1981 to encourage and reward member companies for safety and health advancements made in the workplace.

"Federal-Mogul has a strong commitment to worker health and safety," said Jack Nunes, corporate health and safety manager, Federal-Mogul. "Achieving this award is a testament to the amount of emphasis we place on everyday safety in all of our facilities worldwide."

Federal-Mogul's three facilities were presented an award in the Improvement category, which is given to facilities that achieve an incidence rate that is both 10 percent better than its rate in the previous year and the same or better than the RMA average incidence rate. Awards are determined by measuring the incident rate for lost workday cases based on data supplied in an annual survey by RMA to determine the extent of workplace safety improvements.

The Frankfurt, Summerton and Van Wert facilities manufacture sealing components including oil seals, transmission seals, wear rings and gaskets. The facilities employ a combined 2,250 people and have all achieved QS-9000 and ISO 14001 certification.

RMA President and Chief Executive Officer Donald B. Shea added, "The SHIP awards are in recognition of superb achievement in worker safety, and facilities that qualify for this ought to be quite proud of the accomplishment."

Eighty-six tire and rubber manufacturing facilities were recognized with awards by RMA. One hundred and seventy-seven plants from 52 RMA member companies supplied data for the annual survey to determine the extent of workplace safety improvements. The data supplied to RMA is identical to information provided to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, which publishes injury and illness information of all industries.
