POSTPONEMENT CHALLENGES TRANSPORTER DRIVERS

MOORESVILLE, N.C. - The delay of Saturday's Rockingham 200 to Monday
causes logistical nightmares for everyone involved in the NASCAR Busch
Series. The group affected most by the postponement is the truck drivers who
carry the NASCAR Busch Series cars and equipment to each event.
Gary Clem, 46, is the Great Clips transporter driver for the No. 38 team
with driver Kasey Kahne. The next event for the NASCAR Busch Series teams is
at Las Vegas Motor Speedway - nearly 2,300 miles west of Rockingham. For
Clem, the week will put him on a time-schedule he'd prefer not to be on.
"Normally, we would like to have left the shop in Mooresville at around
Noon Monday," said Clem. "But, I didn't get back from Rockingham until late
afternoon Monday. The guys unloaded and loaded the truck while I slept and I
was able to get on the road at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning."
Clem plans on the trip taking about 36 hours. The teams check in at Las
Vegas Motor Speedway Thursday morning at 11 PST, giving Clem about 54 hours
to make the 36-hour trip, but he'd prefer a little more leeway.
"We can certainly make it, but I like a little more time built in," said
Clem. "If we have a flat tire in the middle of nowhere or run into some bad
weather, then things get a little tight for us."
In fact, the prospect of weather is on Clem's mind as he charters his
route.
"The most direct way is straight out Interstate 40," he continued. "But,
there's always the chance of bad weather, so I may have to drop down to
Interstate 20. If that were the case, then I'd loose four or five hours. I
certainly don't want to go down to 20, but if the weather's bad that's a
better road. I've been watching The Weather Channel since about Thursday."
On Tuesday, Clem drove through about two hours of snow in Eastern
Tennessee. A look to the future, sees the next weather system in Southern
California and moving east….directly along Interstate 40.
Regardless of the weather, Clem plans on rolling into the garage area at
Las Vegas on Thursday morning.
