Czech army seeking purchase of Tatra lorries for Kc 6bn
PRAGUE, Feb 24 (CTK) - The Czech army is planning to buy several hundred new lorries made by Tatra Koprivnice worth Kc6bn and hundreds of armored carriers for Kc32bn by 2012 within an extensive replacement of its fleet, today's Pravo writes, adding the spending will be fully financed from the army's budget.
"The projects of armored carriers and lorries are the backbone projects of modernization of ground forces that are, after all, decisive for potential deployment of the army in operations of either NATO or the European Union in the future," Pravo quotes Defence Minister Jaroslav Tvrdik as saying.
Tvrdik specified that his ministry will buy 633 heavy off-road vehicles worth Kc6.013bn and 583 middle-sized cars for Kc1.683bn by 2008.
Tvrdik will propose to the government a tender only for the middle-sized cars, while the order for the heavy ones will be given directly to Tatra Koprivnice. He told the paper that he does not expect any obstacles on the part of the government. It would be possible to avoid the tender if the purchase of Tatras was regarded as a strategic order, he said.
The army project could boost Tatra's chances on foreign markets, Tvrdik said, adding that Praga is another firm eyeing the supplies of the middle-sized vehicles.
In July, Tvrdik will propose to the government a public tender for the purchase of 398 new armored carries for roughly Kc32bn, to be delivered between 2005 and 2012. The project could be interesting for domestic producers but the ministry expects that there will be suitors from France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Italy and the USA, Pravo writes.
