EDS PLM Software and Services Selected as Corporate Standard by Europe's 'Total' Supplier of Automation Systems for the Global Automotive Industry

Comau's Engineering Business Unit (UTS) Experiences Significant Productivity Increase using EDS' Teamcenter(R) and Unigraphics(R) NX Solutions

PLANO, Texas, Feb. 25 -- EDS today announced UTS, the engineering business unit of the Comau Group, has selected EDS as its corporate standard for product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services.

UTS specializes in complete product and process design for the Comau Group, Europe's "total" supplier of automation systems for the automotive industry. The unit invested more than $2.8 million in 2002 for EDS software and services, including more than 300 seats of Teamcenter Engineering, part of EDS' integrated Teamcenter suite of PLM software; and more than 100 seats of Unigraphics NX, EDS' world-class computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering analysis (CAD/CAM/CAE) software.

"We have ambitious growth plans through 2005 and the selection of the right supplier is strategic for us," said Francesco Ellena, chief operating officer at UTS. "After one year of careful analysis, we have selected EDS and its PLM software and services as part of our long-term growth roadmap.

"The integrated solutions of Teamcenter Engineering and Unigraphics NX are closely related to UTS' expansion," he said. "Our experience at the UTS facilities in Italy has proven that Teamcenter Engineering significantly streamlines data management in different environments. As a result, UTS has decided to extend this solution to its subsidiaries in France and Germany."

Achieving Goals

As a result of this investment, the unit has experienced a significant increase in productivity. "After only eight months since the beginning of the implementation process, we have achieved and partially exceeded our goals of time-to-market reduction and quality improvement," said Giuseppe Molina, advanced engineering manager at UTS. "In particular, the knowledge-based engineering and automated design technologies in Unigraphics NX have shown huge potential for further improvements in both of these areas."

Added Ellena: "Integration is a critical issue for us, so our organization must work with the best CAD systems available on the market, and our PLM system must be fully integrated and support data transfer to and from our customers' systems. EDS' technology, in our opinion, is the only one offering real integration and a good balance for complete product lifecycle management. It meets our expectations and our mission in knowledge and innovation, product and process integration and globalization."
