Dr. Jenne-Tai Wang Of General Motors Awarded "Asian Engineer Of The Year"

Detroit, Michigan - Jenne-Tai (JT) Wang, Ph.D., Principal Research Engineer and Lab Group Manager of Occupant Safety Systems at General Motors Research & Development Center, was honored as one of the "Asian Engineer of the Year" at the second annual National Asian American Engineer Award Banquet in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, on February 22, 2003. At the awards ceremony, also referred as the "Oscar of Technologies," the host organization, the Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA (CIE/USA) recognized Dr. Wang for his accomplishments in automotive safety engineering and for his commitment to the local Chinese American community.

Dr. Tai Chan, a fellow research scientist and president of the GM Chinese Affinity Group - an employee group within GM, introduced Dr. J.T. Wang at the awards ceremony. "Scientists and engineers like Dr. Wang deserve commendation for devoting their professional career to design auto safety systems to keep us and our families safe when we are on the road" said Chan. "Dr. Wang's innovations in automotive airbag technology have made vehicles safer for all of us, even those who do not drive GM vehicles." Dr. Wang acknowledged the award, "It's a very special honor for me to accept this award and it encourages me to work even harder to achieve the highest level of safety for all GM vehicles and to protect everyone on the road."

Dr. J.T. Wang is best known for his pioneering research in the area of occupant protection technology and a computer software code for crashworthiness studies. His work has led to fewer crash tests with automobiles, shorter vehicle development time, and better occupant protection for the automotive industry. His technical accomplishments have earned him many awards during his 17-year career at General Motors.

Dr. Wang earned his bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Taipei Institute of Technology in 1972, a M.S. and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1982 and 1986 respectively. He holds 12 patents and has published widely in the scientific community.

Like many of his fellow GM Chinese Affinity Group members, Dr. Wang is very active in community affairs, especially in K-12 educational programs for young Chinese Americans. Dr. Wang co-founded and serves as a board member of the Southern Michigan Chinese School in Michigan, where children can learn Chinese and Chinese culture every Friday evening.
