Hayner & Sak give Corvette Top 10 status
St. Petersburg, Fla. February 23, 2003 The inaugural running of the St.
Petersburg Grand Prix saw the #02 Trenton Forging Corvette, driven by Stu
Hayner, and the #10 Revolution Motorsports Corvette, driven by rookie
sensation Bobby Sak, bring home their team cars in 5th and 7th place
respectively. The event was the first on the schedule for the 2003 Trans-Am
Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup.
“I’m real proud of both our guys,” said team owner, Don Sak, following
today’s run. “This was a great track, and an exciting race. Bobby and Stu
both dug in and kept our cars in the hunt all day. Bobby did exactly what
we had asked him to. We wanted him to run steady… stay with the field and
finish the day. I think he’s going to have a great rookie year. Martha
[Sak] and I couldn’t be prouder. He did an excellent job.”
Hayner’s day got off to a tough start. When the field took the green flag
on the wide airport straight, Hayner was edged to the outside.
“We came up to take the green flag and the pack fanned out three and four
wide,” said Hayner. “With a long straight start you can have a situation
where the back of the field can really gather up steam heading into the
first turn. I got a little bit wide on the straight and picked up the fine
sand on my tires. I had to ease out of it a bit and lost a few spots. While
I wasn’t happy about it, I was confident we had the car to work our way
back the front.”
“The track was a lot of fun,” Hayner continued. “For Trans-Am, this is what
it’s all about. I thought everyone did a good job giving each other room
while putting on a great show for the St. Petersburg fans. It seemed the
track had some greasy spots… or some sand… something.. I know when we came
off one of the caution periods, going through the “kink” was a bit of an
extra thrill. But it really was a fun race track.”
“I’m pleased with our 5th place finish,” Hayner added, but I really felt we
had a better car at the start. We haven’t pinned it down yet, but at some
point we dropped a valve or something…I know I didn’t have eight
cylinders.. that’s for sure. We just dug in and peddled like crazy. So,
all-in-all, we’re happy were able to put two Corvettes in the top-10.”
“And what about Bobby Sak?” laughed Hayner. “I can’t tell you how great it
was to see him have that kind of run. If he keeps it up, he’s going to have
an amazing season.”
