Kurt Johnson Saves the Best for Last, Qualifies Fourth in Phoenix
Phoenix, Ariz., February 22, 2003 - .On the strength of 6.841-second run made on his final attempt, Kurt Johnson qualified fourth for Sunday's final eliminations of the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals. After leading the Pro Stock field after the first session on Friday, KJ took advantage of running in the left lane on his last run to once again post the quickest elapsed time of the session, and set the stage for a first-round encounter with rival Darrell Alderman.
"We've been working on our ACDelco Cavalier throughout the weekend, fine-tuning the set-up, and it finally came together on that last run. To be honest, the car just hasn't been acting right since the beginning of the year, and although we were able to make some good runs, we found ourselves making changes that we didn't have to in the six races before that.
"We did find a problem in the suspension that we fixed for the last session, made some other adjustments and the car really responded. It does look like the left lane is the hot ticket this weekend, so we'll take lane choice into the first round and work to keep it throughout the day. We know we have the package, it's just up to us to apply it."
