ATLANTA, Feb. 20 -- For the second time in three
years, the NAPA AUTO PARTS racing program celebrated victory at NASCAR Winston
Cup Series' premiere event as the No. 15 NAPA Chevrolet piloted by Michael
Waltrip won this year's Daytona 500.
Winning what many call the "Super Bowl of NASCAR Racing" is a strong start
for the NAPA-sponsored Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) team and the NAPA AUTO PARTS
Motorsports Program.
"When we announced last July that NAPA AUTO PARTS would extend its
sponsorship of Michael Waltrip's No. 15 Chevrolet and Dale Earnhardt, Inc., we
did so knowing that Michael and the other professionals at DEI not only
reflect NAPA's core values, but also represent the excitement NAPA feels for
the challenge associated with quality auto racing," said NAPA President Steve
Handschuh, "NAPA and the family of NAPA AUTO PARTS stores and AutoCare Centers
are committed to being associated with quality people, quality products and
quality events. We celebrate Michael Waltrip's second Daytona 500 victory
with pride and a continued commitment to the excellence that he and the NAPA
brand represent."
Handschuh added that the continued growth of NASCAR and the support of
fans across the nation provide NAPA with a strong marketing tool that is a
vital part of the company's overall marketing strategy.
NAPA has been involved in auto racing for more than 25 years. NAPA's
relationship with DEI began in 1996 in NASCAR's Truck Series, progressed into
the Busch Series and later into the Winston Cup Series.
Waltrip, a member of one of NASCAR's legendary racing families, has
crafted a distinguished career in auto racing. In 1996, Waltrip drove to
victory in The Winston, NASCAR's annual all-star event. A frequent winner in
past years' NASCAR Busch Series competitions, the Owensboro, Kentucky, native
finished runner-up in the Winston Cup Rookie-of-the-Year standings in 1986
after winning the 1983 NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Championship and twice being
named the series' Most Popular Driver.
"Michael is a great driver," Handschuh continued. "He represents himself,
the sport of NASCAR racing and NAPA very well. Our association with Michael
and DEI brings customers in to NAPA stores and helps drive our business.
That's the goal we had in mind years ago when we first got involved in racing,
and we couldn't have created a better scenario than this one to ensure our
continuing success."
Waltrip joins an elite group of drivers with multiple Daytona 500 wins,
including Bobby Allison, Bill Elliott, Jeff Gordon, Sterling Marlin, Richard
Petty and Cale Yarborough.
In addition to two visits to the Daytona 500 winner's circle, Waltrip also
aced Daytona International Speedway victories at last year's Twin 125 and
Pepsi 400 races.
NAPA AUTO PARTS maintains the world's largest inventory of aftermarket
parts, accessories, tools and equipment offered through more than 6,000 NAPA
AUTO PARTS stores and nearly 12,000 NAPA AutoCare Centers nationwide.
