ECD Names James R. Metzger Chief Operating Officer



    ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., Feb. 20 -- The Board of
Directors of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD) announced
that it has elected James R. Metzger as Chief Operating Officer.  Mr. Metzger,
a member of the Board since July 2000, joined ECD's senior management team as
Vice Chairman in November 2002, a position he will retain.
    Stanford R. Ovshinsky, President and CEO, and Robert C. Stempel, Chairman,
in a joint statement, said, "Jim's global experience, commitment to product
and technology leadership, strong technical background and management skills
will be extremely valuable to ECD and our stakeholders.  His extensive
business knowledge and expertise in the energy arena is a real asset to ECD as
we focus on increasing commercial activities.  We are pleased with his
expanded responsibilities."

    Prior to joining ECD, Mr. Metzger served as Texaco Inc.'s chief technology
officer until March 2002.  His responsibilities included all aspects of
technology, corporate planning and economics, safety, health and environment,
corporate services and purchasing.  He was a member of Texaco's Diversity
Council, chaired the Corporate Technology Council and served on the Executive
Council, Texaco's senior management committee.
