UQM Technologies Granted U.S. Patent on Rotor Position Sensing Technology
Patented Technology Enables Accurate Position Sensing Using an Innovative and Low Cost Design
FREDERICK, Colo., Feb. 20 -- UQM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. (AMEX:UQM) announced today that it has been granted a U.S. Patent entitled "Accurate Rotor Position Sensor and Method Using Magnet Ring and Linear Output Hall Effect Sensors." The patented technology enables accurate position sensing of rotating shafts using an innovative and low cost design, which has potentially broad application in a wide range of products where resolvers are now used. The Company originally developed and incorporated this technology in its proprietary gearless brushless direct drive wheelchair motors that have been in volume production since 1998.
"We are extremely pleased by the breadth of protection this patent, and the additional claim filings that are still pending, will provide us for this innovative method for achieving accurate rotor position feedback," said Jon Lutz, UQM Technologies' Director of Engineering. "Our design not only provides an accurate method of sensing the position of a rotating shaft at dramatically lower cost than conventional resolvers, its simple design and topology allows for packaging in axially constrained spaces where the use of a resolver would be difficult or impossible. Our extensive experience with permanent magnets and magnetic fields allowed us to develop this novel approach to position sensing using a simple ferrite magnet disk or ring in conjunction with simple analog sensing electronic boards manufactured by our UQM Electronics business unit."
William G. Rankin, UQM Technologies' President and Chief Executive Officer said, "We believe that this position sensing technology has broad application in a wide variety of markets where the accurate sensing of a rotating shaft is critical to the performance of machines. The simple design and manufacture of this technology is expected to offer a substantial price advantage in those markets where resolvers are in use, and we intend to aggressively pursue commercialization of this patented technology, directly with end users and through potential licensing arrangements."
