Delphi's New Robust Tube Welding Process Enables Cost Effective Tubular Structures
TROY, Mich., Feb. 20 -- Delphi Technologies, Inc. (DTI), a subsidiary of Delphi Corp. , is introducing a revolutionary method for welding metal tubes to solids, sheet metal and other tubes, called Annular Deformation Resistance Welding (ADRW), which allows for increased design flexibility while reducing cost, investment and weight.
The process creates joints through the deformation and displacement of nugget material at the interface. This method creates leak-tight joints with uniform circumferential weld strength.
"Clearly the robustness of ADRW is what makes this Delphi process so unique," said Richard Marczewski, licensing manager in Delphi's technologies licensing group. "Many of the results are unprecedented, making this technology applicable and cost-effective to not only automotive companies, but also non-automotive industries."
The ADRW process for joining metal tubes to solids, sheet metal and other tubes utilizes commonly used lean resistance welding equipment. This process has a wide weld schedule tolerance and welds parts which do not need close dimensional tolerancing. In addition, this methodology can replace expensive welding alternatives such as MIG/TIG/Laser welding and Brazing methods with an inexpensive, fast resistance welding process.
Product designers have not used tubular structures extensively because thin walled tubes are difficult and expensive to weld. ADRW process removes these constraints and makes widespread use of tubular structures viable. This would enable lower cost products with decreased weight and increased structural integrity.
"This technology, along with many others, demonstrates the commitment of Delphi Technologies to partner with licensing companies across a wide range of applications," said Michelle Drage, Director of Delphi Technologies licensing and commercialization organization.
