The Fourth District Court of Appeal heard oral arguments today, regarding jurisdiction of the trial for the March 16, 1988 murders of auto racing legend Mickey Thompson and his wife, Trudy. Both the defense, represented by Jeffery Friedman and the Orange County District Attorney's Office, represented by Deputy District Attorney James Mulgrew, presented arguments in the case, which charges Michael F. Goodwin with two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and three special circumstance charges: Lying in wait; murder for financial gain; and multiple homicides.
The Appeal Court took the case under advisement and is expected to announce their decision in two weeks to two months time. Goodwin's legal team was appealing an earlier trial court decision to have the case heard in Orange County. The District Attorney's office claimed it was appropriate to hold the trial in Orange county, since the conspiracy to commit murder for hire took place there.
Goodwin remains in custody without bail at the Orange County Main Jail, where he has been held since his arrest December 13, 2001.
