Keane Attains Level 3 Assessment on SEI CMM at Toyota

BOSTON, Feb. 18 -- Keane, Inc. (AMEX:KEA) , a leading business and information technology (IT) consulting firm, today announced that its Application Development and Management (ADM) Outsourcing engagement with the Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc. has been independently assessed at Level 3, as measured against the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM). TMS is the primary sales and distribution arm for Toyota in the United States.

As part of its on-going engagement with TMS, Keane supports a portfolio of 100 core business applications covering five major areas -- vehicles, parts, customer surveys, finance, and industrial equipment. The management and enhancement of these mission critical systems, which include mainframe and AS/400 distributed applications, is coordinated through an onsite program management office at TMS's headquarters in California with delivery services provided from Keane's near-shore Advanced Development Center (ADC) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Keane began this program with TMS in April 2001 and the engagement was independently assessed at CMM Level 3 within 18 months of transition. To date, 43 of Keane's outsourcing engagements have been independently assessed at Level 3 or Level 4, including Keane's project with Toyota. The CMM is a de facto standard for measuring the effectiveness of IT organizations. Companies gain significant productivity increases and quality improvements by applying advanced CMM-based processes. Most companies require a minimum of 24 months to be assessed at Level 3 according to industry estimates.

"Through our partnership with Keane for on-going support of application systems, we've been able to focus internal resources on strategic projects, leveraging new technologies to meet the needs of our customers," said Ken Goltara, vice president of Business Systems Development for Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. "Keane's approach with a focus on process improvement and management disciplines has translated to meaningfully control costs for our organization."

The SEI's CMM is an objective vehicle for helping companies achieve information systems process improvements by presenting a series of five well- defined levels, each outlining practices to be adopted and goals to be met before advancing to a greater process maturity. Keane's proprietary Application Management Methodology (AMM), a cornerstone of the company's ADM Outsourcing solution, incorporates performance metrics, project management disciplines, continuous improvement activities, and tight management controls, including quality reviews, project planning, and monitoring, all of which conform to SEI's Level 3 process areas. "Keane's ability to leverage the economic and quality advantages of our near- shore ADC combined with achieving Level 3 assessment in a rapid timeframe provides clients with improved quality, lower costs, and better support for their application environments," stated Steve Kedzior, group vice president for Keane, Inc. "Toyota Motor Sales is a valued customer and we are grateful for the opportunity to partner with them."
