Genmar to Launch Integrated Vessel System -- IVS --; Plans Unveiling in 2004 Model Year
MINNEAPOLIS & PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa.--Feb. 14, 2003--Following three years of research and development, Genmar Holdings, Inc. (Genmar) announced today the planned launch of it's revolutionary Integrated Vessel System (IVS).Developed in partnership with Volvo Penta and Teleflex Incorporated , the Genmar IVS will provide consumers with constant monitoring of their boat's systems while offering automotive-like helm stations and a combination of familiar analog readouts and LCD displays to supply enhanced knowledge of the boat's systems.
The Genmar IVS is also designed to be compatible with most of Genmar's engine partners' basic engine monitoring systems, which are based on the National Marine Electronic Association's (NMEA) 2000 open architecture standards. The NMEA standards are supported by outboard manufacturers Yamaha, Bombardier, Suzuki and Honda.
"The Genmar IVS is just another example of our dedication to consumers and the marine industry" said Genmar Chairman Irwin Jacobs. "With our partners, we have combined the best of all available technologies and established another strong program designed to enhance the consumer boating experience."
Teleflex, a leading global supplier of quality engineered products and services, has developed advanced electronic systems and CANbus (Controller Area Network) technology for the boat-building industry. CANbus Technology allows various streams of data to travel on the system, translating into less wiring and complexity on a boat.
In the future, the system will allow more engine information to be accessible to the boater while providing faster diagnostic capabilities for dealers, enhancing the boating experience.
"Our relationship with Genmar and Volvo Penta, has been strong for many years. This agreement allows our companies to move forward together in delivering superior new technologies to the boating community," stated Jeff Black, president and chief executive officer, Teleflex, Incorporated. "Genmar offers innovative manufacturing technologies and utilizes strong Volvo Penta power and telematics through Genmar FirstMate(TM) Plus to ensure their customers' boating pleasure. Teleflex enhances this product offering with scaleable TE electronic packages from economical serial gauges to full CANbus solutions."
Volvo Penta's involvement in the Genmar IVS brings the benefits of experience. The company has been integrating CANbus Technology into its auto and truck divisions, and has already developed a universal diagnostics component to facilitate service and troubleshooting an engine.
"Volvo Penta has an enormous amount of experience in CANbus Technology through its implementation in the automotive industry," said Volvo Penta North American President Clint Moore. "Most of the major breakthroughs in the auto industry have come in the area of electronics, and that same technology is now being implemented into boating as we continue our efforts to make boating trouble-free."
