General Motors To Continue Sponsoring Both Nascar Winston Cup Series Races At Richmond
RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 12 -- General Motors has reached an agreement on a three-year contract with Richmond International Raceway to continue sponsoring both of the track's NASCAR Winston Cup Series races, officials from both companies announced today. The sponsorship deal also calls for Pontiac to continue to serve as the official car and official pace car and Chevrolet to serve as official truck and official pace truck for the track.
This season, The Pontiac Excitement 400 is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 with the Chevrolet entitled event set for Saturday, September 6. Both races, like all events at Richmond International Raceway, are held "under the lights."
"Richmond International Raceway is certainly one of the most prestigious stops on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule," said Jeff Chew, Marketing Manager for GM Racing. "Over the years, our partnership with the track has provided a perfect platform for us to reach our target audience. We are thrilled to continue this sponsorship at a facility which has provided fans with some of the best racing in the country, has one of the hardest tickets to obtain and is a favorite among fans, drivers and the media."
The 2003 season will mark the 16th consecutive year Pontiac has sponsored the May race and the fourth straight season Chevrolet has sponsored the September race. Both races are annual sellouts. In addition, The Pontiac Excitement 400 is one of the longest, continually sponsored races in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Richmond International Raceway is also home to the Hardee's 250 NASCAR Busch Series event on the same May weekend, which is the longest, continually sponsored race in the NASCAR Busch Series. Hardee's will sponsor that race again in 2003 for the 12th consecutive season.
"We are proud that the best manufacturer in racing is continuing its association with one of the premiere race tracks in the country," said Doug Fritz, president of Richmond International Raceway. "We are looking forward to General Motors' involvement in another exciting season of side by side racing that our fans have come to truly enjoy at 'The Action Track.'"
