Cummins Westport granted $760,000 to apply near-zero PM technology to natural gas engines

VANCOUVER, Feb. 7 -- Cummins Westport Inc., a joint
venture of Cummins Inc. and Westport Innovations Inc. (TSX:WPT),
announced today that it has been awarded $760,000 (US$500,000) to test,
optimize and demonstrate catalyzed particulate controls on low-emissions
natural gas transit bus engines, with the goal of reducing particulate matter
(PM) to non- detectable levels.
The funding, which is subject to contractual agreements, will be
administered by California's South Coast Air Quality Management District
(SCAQMD). Cummins Westport will lead the program with support from well-known
experts in exhaust emission analysis from the University of Minnesota, the
University of Wisconsin and the University of West Virginia. Results are
anticipated to be available in 2004.
"The addition of catalyzed particulate controls will reduce PM emissions
to virtually zero," said Hugh Foden, President of Cummins Westport. "We look
forward to working with South Coast and our other partners to keep natural gas
vehicles at the forefront of California's clean air initiatives."

Cummins Inc. is a global power leader in engines, electrical power
generation systems and related technologies. Westport Innovations is the
leading developer of natural gas fuel systems for diesel engines. Cummins
Westport Inc., formed in 2001, develops and markets low-emissions alternative
fuel vehicle engines manufactured by Cummins.
