PPG Total Service Solutions Offers Greencell Bio-Oxidation System To Help Reduce Volatile Organic Compound Emissions, Odors

TROY, Mich., Feb. 5 -- PPG Total Service Solutions recently
announced a formal alliance with Bio Reaction Industries to offer the
Greencell bio-oxidation system to coatings users and other manufacturers. The
patented system can reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and odors
generated by the coatings application process by up to 95 percent. The
Greencell bio-oxidation system can also cut operating costs by 15 to 55
percent and lower capital costs by 20 to 35 percent compared to conventional
incineration systems.
Under the partnership, PPG Total Service Solutions will function as the
supplier of a variety of products and services related to the system, such as
turn-key project delivery; daily operation, monitoring and support of the
system; various maintenance services; and coordination of environmental
compliance testing.
Unlike traditional incineration systems that require fuel and combustion
to break down VOCs and odors, the Greencell bio-oxidation system uses benign,
naturally occurring microorganisms to convert VOCs in polluted air streams to
carbon dioxide and water. This environmentally friendly process eliminates
the production of hazardous combustion byproducts such as nitrous oxide and
carbon monoxide and decreases carbon dioxide output caused by incineration.
"The Greencell bio-oxidation system is a low-cost, environmentally
friendly alternative to help our customers meet compliance for VOC emissions
when using coatings containing VOCs," said Scott A. Follett, global director,
PPG Total Service Solutions. "With this system, manufacturers have more
flexibility in choosing coatings based on their performance, appearance or
ease of application rather than their ability to meet compliance for VOC
emissions."
According to Follett, the innovative design and ease of operation of the
system, coupled with lower operating and capital costs, make this system a
viable option for manufacturers who install an air pollution control device to
further reduce VOC emissions.
With a multistage and multilayer design, the system can handle small or
large air streams with varying concentrations of VOCs and has a system
footprint that is comparable to traditional incineration systems. The
Greencell bio-oxidation system can be used on spray booths, ovens and other
manufacturing processes to help reduce emissions.
Tualatin, Ore.-based Bio Reaction Industries (BRI) was founded to develop,
manufacture and market products that utilize a patented biofiltration system
to biologically digest volatile organic compounds created by a variety of
generators including industry, military bases, municipalities and waste
treatment facilities.
PPG Total Service Solutions -- based in Troy, Mich. -- is a leader in
providing manufacturers with a cost-effective structured management program
