Federal-Mogul Seals Its Reputation As System Supplier On DaimlerChrysler 5.7-Liter HEMI(R) Magnum V-8 Engine

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Jan. 30 -- That thing got a HEMI(R)? If
so, it also has a complete sealing system designed and manufactured by
Federal-Mogul Corporation.
The DaimlerChrysler 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8 engine reflects a systematic
approach to sealing, integrating premium elastomeric materials and state-of-
the-art manufacturing practices from Federal-Mogul to ensure a leak-free,
weep-free engine.
"DaimlerChrysler choosing Federal-Mogul to undertake the manufacturing of
the entire sealing system of the 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8 engine demonstrates
our strength and knowledge in all areas of sealing," said Mike Fisher,
Federal-Mogul's vice president, Sealing Systems. "Many companies may have
strength in one area of sealing or another, but we were able to fulfill
DaimlerChrysler's request because we excel in manufacturing all sealing
components and understand the complexities of the entire engine environment."
Tom Sroka, Federal-Mogul's program manager, Sealing Systems, added:
"Supplying the entire sealing system for this widely acclaimed engine elevates
Federal-Mogul to a new level. We are being recognized throughout the
automotive industry as offering strong engineering and technical support and
not simply commodity gaskets. We can continue to leverage our experience
supplying complete sealing systems to other world-class engine projects."
Federal-Mogul was awarded the contract to manufacture the entire sealing
system for the 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8 engine in November 1999. Throughout
the four-year process to develop the sealing system, Federal-Mogul had four
full-time design, product and application engineers dedicated to the
DaimlerChrysler project in addition to many other employees involved in the
program.
Seven Federal-Mogul engineering and manufacturing facilities around the
world were involved during the launch of the program from initial product
sampling to production. Several Federal-Mogul facilities in the United States
and Mexico manufactured separate sealing components, and the complete system
was assembled at Federal-Mogul's state-of-the-art, Tepotzotlan, Mexico
facility. Research, development, testing and technical support for the
sealing system of the 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8 came from Federal-Mogul's
technical centers in Skokie, Illinois, and Plymouth and Ann Arbor, Michigan.
DaimlerChrysler's 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8, standard under the hood of
2003 Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups, was recently announced as one of
Ward's "Ten Best Engines of 2003." The 2003 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty 2500 pickup,
equipped with the 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8, won Motor Trend magazine's Truck
of the Year award.
"From the beginning, DaimlerChrysler and Federal-Mogul were dedicated to
setting a new standard in sealing system performance," Sroka said. "The
accolades received by this engine indicate we achieved that goal."
As part of its responsibility to supply the complete sealing system for
the award-winning engine, Federal-Mogul worked hand-in-hand with other major
Tier 1 suppliers to ensure the final product met DaimlerChrysler's high
quality standards. Federal-Mogul supplied them with various sealing system
components, which were then supplied to DaimlerChrysler in the form of sealing
assemblies for the 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8.
"Federal-Mogul had to plan and manage the manufacturing aspect of all
sealing components going into this engine," Sroka said.
The sealing system is not the only thing manufactured by Federal-Mogul for
this award-winning engine. Federal-Mogul also manufactures spark plugs for
the 5.7-liter HEMI Magnum V-8 at its Burlington, Iowa, ignition component
facility and produces the engine's intake and exhaust valve seat inserts,
intake and exhaust valve guides and front cover split bushings at its Waupun,
Wisconsin, facility.
